Siberia

DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOOL EQUIPMENT TO 11 SCHOOLS

Context : In 2007, Mission Enfance launched an exploratory mission in Siberia, in the Khatanga region, towards the Dolgan ethnic group. This mission was lead in partnership with the Albert II Foundation of Monaco, on an environmental project, which financed most of this mission.

This ethnic group lives at the far ends of Russia, North of the polar circle, on the edge of the Arctic. This semi-nomadic population is living today in total isolation. The authorities of Moscow not having the same interested as in the past for these native populations. The children's education is quite supplied with school buildings, the soviet system having been applied thoroughly throughout the whole country, even to the most remote areas. On the other hand, the population suffers the effects of isolation. Men and women fall into alcoholism, for the lack of work and of opportunities linked to reindeer breeding. The children, often uprooted in boarding schools, are cut off from their traditions and culture. Schools are established in each of these semi-nomadic population's villages.

The essential request of the concerned partners is to encourage handcraft with the children, improve the psychology of the pupils (neglected over the last 70 years) and provide sports equipment, all of this always having been neglected. All of this equipment has been bought in Krasnoïarsk, the Siberian capital, and sent for free by the director of the town's airport, thanks to our partner Bernard Buigues' support.

A study on the child psychology should be lead in 2009, by our Colombian coordinator Françoise Bardon, in order to open toys and games libraries in this region.

Coordination : Xabi Chaboulov (Khatanga) and Bernard Buigues (France)

Aim of project : Support the education of the Dolgan children.
